10 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT MARS

From its impressive two moons to the super intense dust storms we countdown the Top 10 Interesting Facts about Mars.

10. The basics Mars
The fourth planet from the Sun, is commonly known as the 'red planet' because of its reddish appearance. Like many other celestial bodies in the universe, Mars is named after a Roman god of war and agricultural guardian. The features of terrestrial planet are very similar to the Moon and Earth. Mars also has impact craters reminiscent of the Moon as well as deserts, volcanoes, valleys, and polar caps comparable to Earth and was first recorded by Egyptian astronomer in 2nd millennium BC.

9. Aurora and mysterious dust clouds
In 1994, astronomers discovered ultraviolet glow in the southern hemisphere of Mars. A decade later in late 2014, NASA's MAVEN spacecraft noticed a blanket of auroras in the northern hemisphere as well. The particles descended deep into the atmosphere of Mars, and created auroras approximately 100 km above the Martian surface. In 2015, NASA detected mysterious high-altitude dust clouds in Mars. It is speculated that the dust is coming from the two moons of Mars, Phobos and Deimos, but it is still unexplained how it got there.

8. Mars has two moons
Talking of moons, Mars has two small natural satellites - Phobos and Deimos. The moons were discovered by Asaph Hall in 1877. Their names are inspired by twins in Greek  mythology and their meanings are quite interesting; Phobos means fear and Deimos means terror. The origin of moons is uncertain.

7. Highest mountain in the Solar System
Mars is home to Olympus Mons, the second highest known mountain and the largest volcano in the Solar System. It was formed approximately 3.3 billion years ago during the start of Amazonian period. The shield volcano is now extinct and lies in the higher land of Tharsis. Mars is also home to one of the largest gorges in the Solar System called Valles Marineris.

6. Future of Mars
Scientists have predicted a plethora of interesting events for Mars. From 20 to 70 million years from now, Mars' moon, Phobos, will be ripped apart by powerful tidal forces because of its close proximity to the Martian surface. Mars will then have a cool ring around it! In 7.5 billion years, Earth and Mars will be tidally locked with the expanding Sun. The Sun will reach the 'red giant' stage and will end up destroying Earth, Venus, Mercury and Mars.

5. Dust storms
Remember how a massive dust storm left Matt Damon stranded on Mars in The Martian? Well, you can't grow potatoes on Mars, but they got that part right. Mars is subjected to the largest and extremely strong dust storms in the solar system. They go on for months and months, and envelope the entire planet. Moreover, the seasons are way more intense than other planets in the Solar System because Mars orbits around the Sun in an oval shaped path. Oh, it also has all the four seasons the Earth has.

4. Water on Mars
Water on Mars create a lot of hype every other week. Water does exist on Mars but as ice and minuscule vapors in the atmosphere. Liquid water can only occur under certain condition because Mars has a very low atmospheric pressure. NASA has discovered evidence of rivers, freshwater lakes and streams that existed once upon a time. If those lakes existed today, Mars would have been habitable.

3. Life on Mars
The origin of Mars is very similar to Earth. People have been looking for evidence of life on Mars for centuries. Major searches only began in the 19th century and continues till today. Many experiments have been conducted for Martian habitability and life. Earth lichens successfully survived in a simulated Martian environment. Curiosity Rover discovered an ancient lake that could have supported life on Mars if it existed today. Currently, a team of scientists are trying to grow potatoes under Martian conditions. Around 68 missions have been launched to Mars since 1960!

2. Pieces of Mars on Earth
Several Martian meteorites have been found on Earth that must have blasted off from the planet due to a comet’s strong impact. These meteorites are invaluable for research.

1. Mars will turn you into bubbles
Water can't exist on Mars because it has a low atmospheric pressure. For the very same reason, if humans went to Mars without proper space suit and gear, they will immediately die because all the oxygen in their body will explode into tiny bubbles. It won’t be a pretty sight.

10 New discover around the world
1. Big-brained mammals are more likely to go extinct
For millions of years, mammals with large brains have had the upper hand when it comes to surviving extinction, but a new study has found the opposite is now true. By examining the relationship between brain size and endangerment status in 160 species, researchers found that mammals with larger brains relative to their body mass were more likely to be at risk.

2. History could last forever in 5D glass
Scientists at the University of Southampton have developed a new way to store digital data that will preserve it for billions of years, even at high temperatures. Using an ultrafast laser, they etched tiny nanostructures inside discs of glass, encoding information in five dimensions – their position in 3D space as
well as their size and orientation – altering the way light reflects off them. The change in reflected light can then be analysed to determine the information they hold.

3. A flower has grown in space
After successfully growing lettuce onboard the International Space Station last year, Commander Scott Kelly and his crew have shown off the first flower to be grown in space. The zinnia plant was grown using the station’s Veggie system, specifically designed for growing crops in microgravity.

4. We have said farewell to Philae lander
The little spacecraft that successfully landed on Comet 67P in November 2014 has now gone into eternal hibernation. The lander has remained silent since July 2015, and is now facing conditions from which it
is unlikely to recover, so ground control has given up sending commands.

5. Bananas are helping to diagnose skin cancer
The black spots that appear on bananas as they age are caused by the enzyme tyrosinase, which also causes the tell-tale spots of the skin cancer melanoma. This information has helped researchers in
Switzerland develop a new imaging technique for measuring tyrosinase levels, which they were able to test on the fruit before trying it on humans.

6. Horses can read human emotions
By showing horses photographs of positive and negative human facial expressions, researchers at the
University of Sussex have proved these animals can distinguish between happy and angry emotions. When shown an angry face, the horses looked more with their left eye – a behaviour associated with processing threatening stimuli – and experienced a rapid increase in heart rate, associated with stress.

7. Climate change will make transatlantic flights longer
You’ll get through more movies than usual on future flights from Europe to North America, as climate change slows down some journeys across the Atlantic. Scientists at the University of Reading have calculated that the jet stream – high-altitude winds blowing from west to east across the ocean – is speeding up, creating stronger headwinds for westbound flights. The good news though, is that eastbound flights will speed up, as stronger tailwinds help push aircraft towards Europe.

8. Spiderman’s feet are not big enough
Ever wondered why you can’t scale walls like your favourite superhero? Researchers at the University of
Cambridge have revealed that in order to climb a smooth vertical surface, humans would need impossibly big feet as they would require adhesive pads covering 40 per cent of their body, or roughly 80 per cent of their front. They concluded that the maximum size an animal could be in order to climb walls is that of a gecko.

9. Hair follicles gradually turn into skin
As we age, our hair follicles slowly stop growing new hair, and now scientists in Tokyo know why. Age-related damage to our DNA triggers the destruction of the protein Collagen 17A1, causing stem cells inside the hair follicles to transform into skin, shrinking the follicles until they disappear.

10. Brain folds are the result of crumpling
In the womb, our brains are initially smooth structures, only developing folds when the foetus is about 20 weeks old. To work out how these folds form, scientists created a gel model of a foetal brain, and immersed it in a solution to make it expand. This revealed that as the outer part of the brain grows faster than the rest, it crumples to form folds.

10 RECENT SCIENCE DISCOVERIES THAT BLEW OUR MINDS
Science is an ever-expanding field with discoveries being made more frequently than any of us may realize. While some may work as simple water cooler conversation in labs, other findings, like the 10 compiled in this installment, are astounding and, at a risk of sounding over-dramatic, completely mind-blowing.

10. Trees Have a Period of Reset
We’ve known for a while that trees are living things that, much like humans, deal with their own cycles of life. One aspect of our towering natural neighbor’s daily routine that we may have been overlooking for quite some time is a period of sleep come night fall. No, you won’t hear a tree snoring outside of your window, but scientists believe that, at the end of the day, when branches droop at night, the tree is entering a period of rest. Using infrared light to illuminate parts of two different trees, one in Finland and one in Austria, researchers came to find that during the night, leaves and branches changed position, dropping about 4 inches or 10 centimeters on a 16-foot or 5-meter tree. Even more intriguing is that some of the branches returned to their original position before the sun even rose, indicating a possible internal clock.

9. The Illustris Project
In early 2014, a large-scale collaboration of scientists across the globe launched the Illustris website, providing the internet with a virtual simulation of the universe. Aiming to better understand the evolution of the universe, Illustris’ simulation starts after the Big Bang and creation of the universe and spans to present day. The near 14-billion-year span is modeled on previously determined calculations and findings of the observable universe to better understand what lies beyond what we can view. Illustris is designed to provide details on dark matter, galaxy formation, and dark energy. By April of 2015, data pooled from Illustris was released publicly.

8. Homo Naledi
Discovered in South Africa’s Gauteng province in 2013, the mysterious fossil uncovered by recreational cavers Rick Hunter and Steven Tucker wasn’t officially verified until 2015. Characterized by similarities in stature and body mass to small-bodied humans, the fossil was deemed to be an as-of-yet unknown extinct species of hominin and was labeled as the genus Homo. By September 10th, 2015, over 1,550 fossils from 15 different individuals were excavated from the cave the original specimen was pulled from. Though popular opinion pinpoints Naledi as a new species of Homo, some researchers contest the classification, claiming further analyses of the specimen is needed to better date the fossils and connect Naledi to the human evolutionary timeline.

7. Entelognathus Fish
Speaking of early timelines, the Entelognathus, which was unsurfaced in 2013 in the Xiaxiang reservoir in China, became a significant evolutionary find. Entelognathus primordialis was an armor-plated fish believed to have lived 419 million years ago as a member of the placoderm class of fish. Where most placoderms have beak-like jaws structured out of bone, the Entelognathus was found to have what looks like a jaw, something not seen until later species of sharks and bony fish. When placed within the current family tree, E. Primordialis becomes the earliest known species showing signs of a modern jaw.

6. Long-Term Memory Cells
Ever worry about what would happen when your brain finally lets go, making it impossible for you to remember anything? Researchers at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia started laying the stepping stones for treatments of neurological disorders when they developed a long-term memory cell that mimics the human brain’s ability to process information. The cell, developed in 2015 at the MicroNano Research Facility, is the very first electronic multi-state memory cell with the capability of processing and storing numerous strands of information, just like the human brain. The finding is just the first step of mirroring our sophisticated neural network, but it’s a vital one in the direction of perfecting the bionic brain.

5. Creation of Vocal Cords
Being made of organic material, the human body is susceptible to breaking down under certain conditions and circumstances, but advancements in science have made our genetic deterioration a worry of the past. One of the latest scientific finds is a step in the direction of removing the permanency of the loss of speech. In 2015, researchers were successful in growing viable vocal cord tissue that, when transplanted into animals, produced noise. While the research still has quite a way to go before being used in human subjects, the find was an incredible step in the right direction. The biggest challenge so far has been cultivating the perfect tissue to create the cord, as it needs to be flexible but still durable, so transplants are still a thing of the future. The vocal cord tissue was the product of cadaver and living vocal cord cells that took weeks to turn into the workable product.

4. Artificial Photonic Molecules
In 2013, a joint effort between MIT and Harvard was working with a natural form of matter and discovered something that could brighten the attitude of any lover of Sci-Fi. Comparing their finding to lightsabers from Star Wars, the researchers were able to artificially reproduce photonic molecules, which are typically found in sunlight. The significance of photonic molecules is that, when they interact with each other, they essentially create a source of light that also has a mass. Though you shouldn’t expect to be dueling with photonic light swords in the near future, it’s believed that these molecules may be able to form 3D structures and may even reduce the headache of classical computing, as they’re easier to employ than electrons.

3. Artificial Senses
There may come a time when people are more robotic than anything else and Professor Kevin Warwick, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Coventry University, and his team have developed the latest and greatest enhancement implant. Through the use of magnetics, which were implanted in Warwick and members of his team of students, the professor has created a means to benefit from additional senses. One of Warwick’s students linked his magnetic implant with an ultrasonic detector installed on a baseball cap. The two work together to give the student a perception of how close or far an object may be to him through vibrations from the implanted device. Another student augmented his implant to be able to remotely sense heat from objects by connecting an infrared sensor.

2. Cyborg Flesh
As science progresses, the concepts of Westworld and Terminator start to seem a lot less fantastical and veer away from being little more than creations of science fiction. Adding to this future of synthetics is an artificial flesh made from a mix of living cells and several mechanical enhancements. Starting with a 3D base around which cells grow, engineers then weave nanowires and transistors into the living tissue, creating nanoelectric scaffolds. From this, a cyborg tissue is born that has the physical properties of real flesh, just with a few added perks. The flesh is complete with a sensory network, though all it’s capable of currently is reading data. The lead researcher on the Harvard team behind the project, Charles Lieber, aims to design the tissue to talk with other biological systems, just like real skin.

1. Mind Controlled Prosthetics
The human body can break down and entire limbs can be removed, but as tenacious and innovative as people are, none of those detriments need to be permanent. The advent of highly advanced artificial limbs offer the possibility for amputees to be able to use their new prosthetics to their fullest extent. That means being able to control the movement of the limbs using nothing more than the brain. Patients provided with this advanced prosthetics could grab hold of objects with issue, but researchers at Johns Hopkins University aim to take things further by perfecting a prosthetic hand with fingers that can be moved individually and independent of one another.

10 SCIENCE FACTS YOU DIDN'T LEARN IN SCHOOL

We all had to take basic science classes in school, and we all took what was said verbatim. Surely there had to be more interesting things to talk about? Well, guess what? There was, and we were deprived of learning about the cooler stuff! Here are 10 science facts you didn't learn in school! Were you a wiz kid in school? Then stay tuned for our upcoming quiz! The best answer will win the coveted award of being pinned at the top, so be sure to upvote your favorite answer!

1. Flying Balls

If you played any kind of sport like tennis or soccer, then you might be familiar with the Magnus effect. For example, a group of guys dropped a basketball from the top of a 415 foot High Dam. When they just dropped the ball, it landed below under where it was droppped. On the next basketball, they added a spin before dropping, and the result was that the ball ended up flying through the air. The Magnus effect has been used to describe how balls fly in the air in tennis and soccer, and it has been used in lieu of sailboats and wings for an airplane. It's all about the direction of the spinning and flow of the air!

2. Grenade Survival

Grenades and explosives are no joke, and if we encounter one in person, we think we're generally doomed. If you encounter a grenade underwater, you're actually less likely to survive that if you encounter a grenade by land. Why? the blast from a grenade on land is less lethal because air is compressible. But underwater, the blast wave will crush your lungs because you can't fight back with a wave of equal force. So if you see a grenade underwater, get out of the water ASAP!

3. No glasses No problem

If you wear glasses, and you know that if you don't have them, you're pretty much screwed. But not all hope is lost! whether your glasses broke, or your contacts fell out, there is another way! All you need to do is make a pinhole with your hands and look through it. It's works! But what is this witchcraft?  Vision is connected with light, and how much of it is coming through your retinas. By making a pinhole, you are controlling and focusing the light that's coming into your retinas, and will help you see clearer without your glasses. Obviously, don't try this while driving. You hear us, mr. Magoo?

4. Exploding Whales

Dead whales pop up on beaches often, and that is literal! If you see a dead whale on the beach, you might be tempted to get a closer look. But in reality, you need to stay as far away as possible. As the dead whale decomposes, it fills up with methane and other gases. Because humans love to poke around at dead whales, this causes the body to explode when provoked. That is not only a massive mess, but it is a mess that smells awful!

5.Raining Diamonds

As that famous song goes, "Diamonds are a girl's best friend!" and if it was possible to inhabit Saturn and Jupiter, we imagine women everywhere would want to live on the planet. Scientists strongly believe that diamonds rain from the skies of Saturn and Jupiter. It all has to do with methane, and the planets' lightning storms turning into soot. Then, the soot hardens into chunks of graphite and diamond as it falls to the ground. Are there any science experiments you wish you did in school? Stay tuned to find out more cool science facts and see if your answer changes!

6. Swallowing a Star

Stars and black holes have been studied for hundreds of years. In science class, we learned that stars can get swallowed up by black holes. But what actually happens? And what does it look like? When a black hole swallows the star, the star is ripped apart by the black hole's gravitational force. Some of the stars remains go into the black hole, while the rest is "burped out", causing a huge jet of plasma to shoot out. So next time you get in trouble for burping at the table, just say you're emulating a black hole!

7. Fungus for Relatives

When Charles Darwin first introduced the theory of evolution, religious people went nuts because it went against their belief in creationism. There are still creationist that take offense to the fact that we may have evolved from monkeys. But we might have another relative, and that is mushrooms. This is because mushrooms are fungi and they share a common ancestor with animals, which is algae. Also, fungus plays a major role in the decomposition process of living things, including humans. Want some stuffed human meat...erm...we mean mushrooms?

8. Burping in Space

If you are dreaming about becoming an astronaut, and you hope to one day be able to burp in space, then call us"dream dashres." You actually can't burp in space. It all depends on gravity. Gravity helps keep the solid and wet stuff down so that all that comes out is gas. But when there is no gravity, after you try to burp, you'll end up vomiting instead. The same goes for farting...taking starting to a whole new cosmic level!

9. Frozen Boil

We have learned that if water gets to 32 degrees fahrenheit, then it freezes. If water reaches 212 degrees Fahrenheit, it boils. With this in mind, it should be impossible for water to freeze and boil at the same time, right? Wrong! It's called, "the triple point" and it happens when conditions are just right for all three phases of water (solid, liquid, and gas) to coexist in thermodynamic equilibrium. It's not an experiment you can do at home safely, but it can happen!

10. Wide Open Spaces

Atoms are like many solar systems, and matter is generally empty. In other words, atoms have a lot of space between each other. If you were to remove that space, you can fit the entire human race into the volume of a sugar cube. Atoms are 99.99% empty space! Only four percent of the mass of the universe is the atoms that make up the planets, stars, and humans, the rest is empty space. Remember that question we asked earlier based on these new facts, what experiments the you wish you did in school?

10 WEIRD DISCOVERIES THAT SCIENCE CAN'T EXPLAIN
Just because scientists can see, observe, and study something doesn't mean they're able to fully explain it. 10. Why Do We Dream?
Have you ever woken up from a horrific dream and wondered why your brain did that to you? Well, nobody has an answer, really. We know that we do dream, but scientists aren't sure why we do. Theories are thrown around involving forms of memory processing that consolidates short-term to long-term memories, an extension of waking consciousness, the brain's response to biochemical and electrical changes that occur during sleep, and the brain's means of preparing for threatening events and dangers. Have fun pondering over those concepts the next time you're lying awake, waiting for sleep to take you.

9. The Mars Hole
We know that the surface of Mars is a cratered mess, but there's a feature that was discovered in 2017 near the planet's South Pole that has left NASA scientists perplexed. Amidst the expected planet-wide pockmarks is a pit that's quite a bit deeper than expected. Though it's known that meteorite impacts have altered Mars' terrain, there's no indication of what caused the deep pit. Imaging of the odd feature has shown that ice does form at its base, but that doesn't help determine what caused the near 1,000-foot hole. For now, it remains one of the many mysteries of space.

8. The Tully Fish
Look at this ugly thing. It looks like something you'd create in Spore. Nobody? Eh, moving on. The Tully Fish was an ancient sea creature that created a series of debates among scientists, one that was thought to have ended in 2017 when it was classified as a vertebrate. Unhappy with that answer, however, another group of researchers have stepped in to say the aquatic creature could not have been a fish. And so, we're back at square one. There is only one species of Tully Fish, the T. gregarium, and the only fossils to be discovered were in the Mazon Creek fossil beds of Illinois. While scientists are still going back and forth, I'm sticking with Spore. Okay, fine. Nobody plays that anymore.

7. Humpback Super-Groups
The first important question to answer is "what is a humpback supergroup." In short, it's a large group of humpbacks, as many as 200, observed together in one location. Fairly simple answer, but that doesn't answer the pressing question that remains - why are they grouping together in regions they otherwise wouldn't? According to a paper published in the journal Plos One, why the supergroups are forming "remains speculative," but one of the more popular answers deals with a changing ecosystem that's dwindling the presence of humpback prey. A far less exciting reason is that this isn't really new behavior - we just haven't observed it yet.

6. The Great Pyramid of Giza Cavities
In 2016, the ScanPyramids project, which scanned the interiors of the Old Kingdom pyramids of Egypt using various technologies, uncovered two unknown cavities in the Great Pyramid of Giza. The team of researchers from Cairo University's Faculty of Engineering and a Paris-based non-profit known as Heritage Innovation and Preservation, discovered one cavity 345-feet from the ground on the northeastern edge of the pyramid and a second "void" located on the northern side by the upper part of the entrance gate. Further research provided them a 3D scan of the cavities for further study, but there is still no answers as to what they were used for.

5. Earthquake Booms
We've covered them in prior Archives, the unmistakable boom that sometimes happens before an earthquake hits. They're nothing new and there are plenty of videos online about them, but why do they occur? According to the United States Geological Survey, these naturally occurring booms are a mystery, but scientists predict they may be connected to shallow earthquakes that aren't recorded by seismographs. Whatever their cause, they are haunting noises that sound more like a signal of the apocalypse.

4. Blood Types
Why we have different blood types is a question that probably hasn't crossed your mind yet. We just kind of accept it. In 1900, Karl Landsteiner first discovered blood types and, since then, it's been a battle to uncover everything about them. As University of California biologist Ajit Varki puts it, "We still don't know exactly what they're for." One proposed reason for their existence relates to diseases, specifically the prevalence of Type O blood in regions with high cases of malaria. Based on this research, it's believed that blood type was an evolutionary advantage intended to ward off diseases as malaria has a hard time infected Type O blood cells. It's not a definitive answer, however, and the question remains.

3. The Space Roar
In 2009, NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center sent the Absolute Radiometer for Cosmology, Astrophysics, and Diffuse Emission (ARCADE) into space in search of radiation from the universe's earliest stars. What it wound up picking up, however, was a large amount of radio noise that's become known as the "space roar." At six times louder than what scientists expected, the "space roar" is an anomaly, with several theories in place to try and explain it. Some scientists think it's a remnant from the earliest stars while others believe it's coming from gases in large galaxy clusters. Unfortunately, nobody thinks that it's aliens.

2. Star Jelly
On multiple occasions around the globe, gelatinous blobs have been reported falling from the sky. In Texas, Scotland, the United Kingdom - it's a worldwide occurrence that nobody can quite get a grasp on. Though scientists have studied samples of the jelly, they're unable to determine its precise origin. In the 18th century, Thomas Pennant believed it to be a material "vomited up by birds or animals," such as frog spawn that amphibian-eating avian are gobbling up and regurgitating. Problem is, the jelly is quite large for frog spawn. The National Geographic Society even commissioned scientists to perform tests, but no traces of DNA were found.

1. The Light of KIC 8462852
Also known as Tabby's Star or Boyajian's Star, the F-type main-sequence star in the Cygnus constellation, more than 1,470 light-years away from Earth, has an unusual trait that researchers can't quite pin down. At certain points in time, light from the star fluctuates, sometimes up to 22% dimmer, and nobody really knows why. There are several theories, including a circumstellar dust ring, a planetary debris field, a nearby planet with oscillating rings, and the star's consumption of a planet; but our favorite is the hypothesis of an artificial megastructure. Maybe it's not the most popular theory - but it's definitely the most fun.

13 CRAZY FRUITS YOU'RE NEVER HEARD OF
How is this giant mystery fruit found at your local supermarket the fruit of the future? What incredibly toxic fruit is a common dessert in Mexico and Panama? Find out in 13 Crazy Fruits You've Never Heard Of!

13. Hala Fruit

The Hala fruit that grows on the Pandanus tectorius trees in Australia, Hawaii and other islands in the South Pacific has long been a delicacy of Pacific Islanders. At first glance one might think the Hala fruit is the brain of a bizarre alien species but once you break off one of the fruit's sections called keys you will find the juicy nectar the fruit is famous for. The fruit is shades of bright orange, yellow and red giving it the appearance of a planet's molten core. The fruit and the nectar it produces has a taste that is likened to that of a mango and sugar cane. Because of the fruit's stringy make-up the plant has been used by islanders as a natural type of dental floss.

12. Cherimoya

The Cherimoya found in the tropical rainforests of Central and South American may look like an artichoke that isn't fully formed or a ball made out of alligator skin but looks can be deceiving. The Cherimoya over the years has earned the nicknames 'custard apple' and 'the tree of ice cream' because of its easily scoopable creamy innards that have the  texture of yogurt and flavor that is said to be most similar to a mixture of peaches, strawberries and bananas. Because of this and the abundance of vitamins within it, it has long been a favorite dessert of the Incas and other native peoples. American author Mark Twain was once quoted as call the Cherimoya "the most delicious fruit known to men".

11. Rambutan

What looks like a clown's nose overgrown with hair or a vibrant red sea urchin, the Rambutan is actually one of the most popular fruits of of Southeast Asia. The word Rambutan itself come from the Malaysian word for hairy but if you want to  try new fruits rest easy knowing that you don't have to eat the hairy part. Once the red leathery skin is removed a pearly white colored fruit is revealed. This fruit has a soft texture and flavor that has been compared that of a white grape. Inside the flesh there is a large seed but this can be removed before consumption or spat out while devouring the fruit whole. Because of the fruits popularity and ability to be grown in almost any tropical climate you can now find it often in international supermarkets inside the United States.

10. Aguaje Fruit

This weird red fruit about the size of a golf ball appears as though it is covered in the scales of a snake but once you scratch and peel off this skin a juicy orange fruit is revealed inside. The Aguaje Fruit is native to the tropical regions of South America and it is such a valued food and popular resource of the locals that they type of palm tree it grows on has become endangered. Another reason for this is its recent adoption as a superfood by the rest of the world. The Aguaje Fruit is chock full of Vitamin C and Vitamin A and is commonly used in women's weight loss supplements as the special active ingredient. In the Amazon the Aguaje Fruit has been used for centuries for dyes, treating burns and made into an extremely sweet wine. The fruit is said to taste similar to a sweet carrot or a mango and has long been associated with enhancing a woman's beauty.

9. Ugli Fruit

This fruit is just called Ugli by chance it really is truly ugly, but you should never judge a fruit by its peel. What looks like a month-old orange that you found underneath your refrigerator is actually a hybrid combining a mandarin orange and a grapefruit that was accidentally created at the beginning of the 20th century in Jamaican farmlands. While the rind of the fruit may be wrinkly and splotched with shades of faded orange, yellow and green the inside beholds a mouth-watering flesh that is said to taste like a juicier less sour grapefruit. It is also almost the same size as a grapefruit and the wrinkly rind actually makes peeling the Ugli Fruit incredibly easy. Just like all citrus fruits it is loaded with vitamins C and A as well as powerful antioxidants making it an ideal snack for the active adventurer.

8. Physalis

If you visit South America you may find yourself walking right past this gem of a fruit without even realizing. The physalis fruit is encased in a flaky husk that gives it the appearance of a flower bulb or an inflated leaf but the almost perfectly round orange fruit inside has long been a favorite of South Americans. There are over 70 different species of Physalis all with their own unique nicknames such as the native gooseberry and peruvian groundcherry. The fruits are a part of the nightshade family like that of an eggplant and their flavor has been likened to a tomato--being not too sweet, savory and semi-acidic. Because of this profile they are often used in sauces for pasta or chopped up and thrown  into stews.

7. Monstera Deliciosa

Native to Panama and Mexico the Monstera Deliciosa, also known as the Swiss Cheese Plant is like the fruit version of the Japanese Pufferfish, extremely toxic but if prepared correctly one of the most delicious delicacies imaginable. The fruit itself doesn't look like much, kind of like a hard corn cob that is bright shade of green, but inside there is a fruit that has people risking their lives to indulge in its juices. The seeds and skin of the plant are chock full of poison but if you wait for the fruit to be ripe enough the poison inside loses it potency. Once the flesh is carefully removed it can be eaten raw and is said to taste like a more mellow vegetal pineapple and have a similar consistency.

6. Jabuticaba

Is that some weird spherical fungus growing of that tree? Has an extraterrestrial coated the tree in dark purple eggs? No, that's just the Jabuticaba tree and yes its fruit grow in clusters straight out of the trees branches and trunk. This bizarre tree is found throughout South America mainly in Brazil where it is referred to colloquially as the Brazilian Grape Tree. The fruit, the same hue as a plum and the size of a blueberry, is a wildly popular fruit used in a wide variety of local desserts. It is said to have a taste that like a combination of grapes, strawberries and melons. Because the fruit naturally starts to ferment three days after being plucked it has also become a common source of homemade liquor and wine.

5. Soursop

The soursop is the twisted spiky cousin of cherimoya and shares many of the same characteristics. The fruit is commonly found in the Caribbean, Mexico and the northern parts of South America and like the cherimoya has a creamy flesh that is flavored like a citrusy cross between a pineapple and strawberry. Beyond being intensely scrumptious the Soursop is one of the healthiest foods in the world. Other than being filled with B and C vitamins the fruit contains large amounts of cancer-fighting antioxidants. The Soursop has long been used by locals for the treatment of various conditions like respiratory illnesses and arthritis because of its anti-inflammatory attributes. Not only that but the indigenous caribbean people have used it for thousands of years as the main ingredient in a relaxing tea that alleviates stress and insomnia. The seeds once crushed are often made into various types of topical ointments and powders that is reported to reduce wrinkles and other signs of aging.

4. Mangosteen

The Mangosteen has been harvested in Southeast Asia and India for thousands of years but its new popularity as a so-called superfood has spread this strange fruit across the globe. On the outside the mangosteen is purple and red and has a hard inedible rind but on the inside what at first looks like a garlic clove is actually a quite succulent fruit. It is described as having one of the most unique tastes of any fruit on Earth--a combination that can best be summed up as that of peaches and lychee with a slightly oniony aftertaste. The flavor might not be for everyone but those who do enjoy it find it irresistible. One famous monarch in particular, Queen Victoria, liked Mangosteens so much that she offered rewards to anyone that could bring her a bushel. This is one of the reasons why the Mangosteen is heralded as the Queen of Fruits. The fruit also has a wide variety of medicinal purposes, rendering it extremely valuable. It has been used commonly as a cure for indigestion, diarrhea, weight loss and as a general immunity booster amongst other uses.

3. Kiwano

The exterior of the Kiwano melon can be off-putting to those unfamiliar with the fruit as it looks like something that should be crawling across the sea-floor or found on a distant planet. But to those who have tasted its delights the sight of it speckled orange spikes causes the stomach to rumble and the mouth to water. Commonly grown in Australia and Africa, the kiwano melon is known by many names such as blowfish fruit, the African horned cucumber, the jelly melon and most commonly as the horned melon. It is considered one of the juiciest fruits on the planet and its slimy green inside is said to be similar in flavor to that of a cucumber crossed with a kiwi. Because of its weird appearance and its unique tropical flavor the Kiwano has recently risen in popularity in the United States.

2. Miracle Fruit

The Miracle Fruit doesn't have any crazy medicinal properties nor will it give you magical powers but it does have the remarkable ability to turn anything sour, sweet. This rare fruit only thrives in the wild in the tropical lowlands of west Africa but because of it unusual quality demand has been skyrocketing for the red berry all over the world. The Miracle Fruit also known as The Miracle Berry looks the most like a cherry tomato that has been stretched into a torpedo shape. The berry is said to not have much flavor at all by itself but once the juices hit your tongue they have the odd effect of making anything you eat after significantly altered in flavor. If you ingest a Miracle Fruit and then bite into a lemon, you won't find yourself puckering but instead enjoying all the lemon's sweetness and bright scent as if you had dipped it in sugar. This fascinating effect is said to last upward of half an hour per bite. The bizarre and fun experience of the fruit's flavor changing powers has even led to companies creating Miracle Fruit capsules that people can chew before sucking on sour candies, limes and anything sour you can get your hands on.

1. Jackfruit

You may have seen this gargantuan relative of the fig at your local supermarket and been so overwhelmed the sheer size and unusually bumpy green texture of it that you never considered actually using it in a dish. In fact, many grocery stores keep Jackfruit in stock just for the shock value and curiously exotic nature. But this bulbous fruit that can grow up to 100 pounds in weight may just be the fruit of the future. Grown from India to Sri Lanka the Jack Fruit has become one of the most popular fruits in Southern Asia because of its nutrient filled flesh and many other uses. The inside of the fruit is bright yellow reminiscent of a mango crossed with a pineapple, but it is said to have a much subtler flavor, like that of a banana or artichoke heart. Jackfruit are noted for having a stringy and chewy texture which has led some vegan restaurants to started using it as a substitute for pork in pulled pork sandwiches. The jackfruit is notorious for its ability to be grown in a wide varieties of climates thriving more and more the closer to the equator one goes. Because of climate change the tropical regions of the world are greatly expanding making bountiful and adaptable fruits like Jack more and more valuable. Which of these fruits do you want to try the most and why?

10 BIZARRE THINGS FOUND IN SPACE
You thought that just because we’d made our rounds throughout our solar system that we were done with our intergalactic travel? Nope! There’s so much more in that deep vast blackness that will keep us busy for some time to come – such as these 10 incredibly bizarre and unusual objects that have either been found in or have come from space!

10. Rogue Planets
Imagine being left to float all by your lonesome in space, pulled from your planetary system by a gas giant’s gravitation pull. You’re a rogue planet, a nomadic mass that orbits the galaxy’s core instead of a star, kind of like a ship without a port. There are believed to be billions of rogue planets in the Milky Way alone, though some scientists theorize some of them, known as sub-brown dwarfs, are more akin to stars than planets. These homeless planets are normally aimless and harmless, though one individual from the University of Louisiana, Daniel Whitmire, spoke out about a mysterious “Planet Nine” or Nibiru which could cause an extinction event on Earth and is possibly responsible for prior events.

9. Gliese 581g
Back in 2010, Gliese 581g took astronomers by surprise. They believe they had found a planet beyond our solar system that was so similar to Earth that it could be habitable by human life. Gliese 581g was thought to orbit its own star and came in at about the same size and temperature as Earth, but some astronomers think there’s a big issue with the exoplanet – they don’t think it exists. Speaking against the Pro-Gliese 581g crowd, astronomers like Paul Robertson claim that the would-be Super Earth is nothing more than a magnetic outburst from a star, mislabeled as a habitable planet. While there are still those that believe 581g is as originally thought, the potential exoplanet was removed from the Habitable Exoplanet Catalogue of the Planetary Habitability Laboratory of the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo.

8. Dark Matter
It’s strange to think that, even today, with the technology we have, about 27% of the  universe’s mass simply cannot be observed. That quarter portion has come to be known as dark matter, a mysterious unknown of our universe that is more easily distinguished by what it is not than what it is. Popular theory states that dark matter is nothing observable, such as baryonic clouds, and is nothing that emits light, ruling out any star and planetary formations. Possibilities are said to include dim brown dwarfs, neutrino stars, white dwarves, or even supermassive black holes, but the most considered prospects are Weakly Interacting Massive Particles, or W.I.M.P.s. These particles are said to have up to 100 times the mass of a proton but weaker interactions, making them hard to detect.

7. Magnetars
Space isn’t just filled with peaceful nomad planets and potentially habitable exoplanets. There are also volatile, explosive stars that erupt with no warning. Sometimes it’s magnetars, magnetic stars that aren’t powered by nuclear fusion. These unique stars are unlike their sparkling brethren and have an unfathomable magnetic field that is stronger than any other object in the universe, even man-made magnetics. They’re said to be formed from a perfect line-up of the star’s spin, temperature, and magnetic field when collapsing into a neutron star and can be incredibly dangerous at a range of approximately 630 miles or 1,000 kilometers. As of 2016, only 29 magnetars have been discovered.

6. Black Hole
They’re pretty well known to even the common Earthling, but that doesn’t make the concept of the Black Hole any weirder. Hollywood often uses them as a means of transdimensional travel, but seeing as how nothing is able to escape from inside of it – not even light – that’s a highly unlikely scenario. These black voids, detectable only with specially designed telescopes and by gauging strong gravitational effects, are typically formed when a large star collapses on itself, though smaller and supermassive black holes are believed to have formed at the same time as their galaxy. The unknown of black holes can make them mystifying and terrifying, but there are no black holes near enough for Earth to fall into and our Sun is not large enough to create one.

5. Black Widow Pulsar
Like the creepy crawly black widow spider that it’s named after, the Black Widow Pulsar is known to essentially “devour” any low-mass stars that it comes in close proximity with. Pulsars are formed through a supernova, when a neutron star is left behind and starts to rotate at a rapid pace. As they spin, they emit radio waves, X-rays, gamma rays, and visible light rays until they begin to slow down, at which point the emissions become weaker. To repower themselves, the pulsars will essentially eat away at their companion star’s material until, after millions of years, only the refueled pulsar is left.

4. Pillars of Creation
Like eerie skeletal fingers of some galactic God, the Pillars of Creation seem to stretch out into the colorful vastness. The beautifully horrific image, likely the creepiest picture ever of space, came from the Hubble Space Telescope and depicts interstellar gasses and dust found 7,000 light years from Earth in the Eagle Nebula. As the name suggests, the odd picture depicts creation as the gas and dust are believed to be in the process of forming new stars. As if the image wasn’t imposing enough, the fingers of the formation are larger than our very own solar system. Updated, 3D images of the gaseous structure shows that they are slowly falling apart and may only have another 3 million years left in their lifespan.

3. Sagittarius B2
Who said the universe can’t be delicious? Okay, probably nobody because it’s a silly thing to declare, but if they had, we would fire back with the unusualness that is Sagittarius B2. No, this isn’t a new vitamin, it’s a colossal dust cloud 390 light years from the center of our galaxy that’s comprised of a large portion of ethyl formate. This specific chemical compound smells of rum and is partially responsible for the way raspberries taste. It’s believed that the ethyl alcohol attaches to dust particles left over from a star formation and, when the dust moves towards the star, the alcohol heats up and becomes its own gas. Bizarre? Yes. The best thing to happen to space pirates? We think so!

2. Galactic Cannibalism
What looks like 2 galaxies merging into 1 mega galaxy or some bizarre mating ritual, is actually similar to the Black Widow Pulsar, just on a grander scale. The concept of galactic cannibalism comes into play when two galaxies collide and are left with little momentum to continue traveling on their path. Without the oomph to push forward, the galaxies just kind of settle into one another and begin to merge, typically forming an irregular galaxy. Known instances of galactic cannibalism can be seen with the Mice Galaxies, Whirlpool Galaxy, and Antennae Galaxies.

1. Brightness Fluctuations in KIC 8462852
If you’ve been waiting for a time to use that Giorgio A. Tsoukalos’ Ancient Aliens meme when discussing the fluctuation in brightness of F-type star KIC 8462852, now would be the perfect time. Typically, any sort of change in brightness is associated with the presence of a planet – in fact, it’s one way exoplanets can be detected; but the approximate 15% drop in starlight is considerably greater than the 1% caused by a planet the same size as Jupiter. The object would have to be massive, something that scientists believe they would have  identified by now. So, they’re left considering an incredibly unusual possibility: Aliens.

10 CREEPY URBAN LEGENDS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
1. Meat Is Murder (Germany)
The legend goes that in post-war Berlin a woman who was walking through a crowd one day saw a blind man struggling. She offered to help him. He told her he was trying to deliver a letter - would she take it for him? It was on the way she was heading, so she said 'sure'. She set off with the letter, but remembered to check and see if the blind man was doing okay. She caught sight of him without his glasses and cane, hurrying down an alley. Feeling suspicious, she went to the police. When they went to the address on the letter she'd been given, they found bags of human flesh. The letter itself read: "This is today's serving". 1947 was known as the "Year of Hunger' in Germany, a country recently decimated by World War Two. People avoided starvation by eating what they could find: dogs, cats, rats, frogs, snails, as this rumor attests to, people.

2. The Well To Hell (Russia)
In 1984 a team of Russian scientists drilled deeper than ever before into the Earth's crust. It was on a remote peninsula in Northern Russia that hell was purportedly discovered, 12 kilometers below the surface. Supposeedly they through a point that reached 2000 degrees when the drill started sspinning strangely. They lowered their microphones in to take measurements and listened. It was then that they heard thousands of human voices, all screaming in agony. Were they souls trapped in hell? An explosion followed and a winged devil burst from the hole in the ground, killing 13 of the workers.
The story was reported around the world, but originated with a Christian group in Finland that heard of the experimental drilling. As might be expected, this is an exaggeration that has compounded over the years.

3. The Crying Boy (UK)
In 1985 The Sun newspaper in Britain printed a story title 'Blazing Curse of the Crying Boy'. The Crying Boy in question was a painting by Giovanni Bragolin that was found in perfect condtion after a house had been burned inside out. What's more, a firefighter at the scene said he knew of numerous other fires where the 'Crying Boy' painting had been. An investigation was carried out, but not before panicked members of the public began throwing their paintings onto bonfires. Over 50,000 versions of the cursed painting had been sold at this point. The investigators found that the paintings were varnished with flame retardant and so survived the fires. Although this didn't explain why no other varnished paintings were turning up.

4. The Lucifer Statue (Philippines)
Satan standing triumphant over Angel Michael makes for an odd sight in the Catholic Philippines. This is the grave of Don Simeon Bernardo, who ordered the statue be placed there on his death in 1934. Bernardo was tortured and, as a result, didn't have particularly rosy view of the world.

The evil on display shocked residents, but it's just a statue - or is it?

Locals say the statue was initially much smaller than it currently is and has been growing over the years. Others say that the demon files off at night so the wrought iron cage has been places around the statue to keep it from escaping. The surprising truth is that the statue has grown, but in a sort of self-fulfilling prophesy. Phone to vandalism due to its irreligious nature the damaged statue was replaced by a slightly larger version in the 1970s and protected from abuse by a large cage.

5. Kaala Bandar (India)
Fifteen years ago mass hysteria swept the city of Delhi in India. During a 5-day period, the terrifying Kala Bandar roamed the streets. It pounced on people in the middle of the night, gouging their arms and necks. Described as 4 feet tall, with the horrifying face of a chimp and bearing iron claws, it was given the nickname the 'Monkey-Man of Delhi'. One man even fell to his death when he thought he saw the Monkey-Man. Another eyewitness described the terrifying situation: "The creature had its hands on my tights when I woke up. When my mother picked up a broomstick, it jumped out of the balcony". No monkey, man or monkey-man was ever caught, but the legend of Kala Bandar lives on, frightening children.

6. Under The Bed (USA)
This is a classic from the USA, a teenage girl is home alone and starts to receive strange messages on to her phone. She keeps ignoring the messages and carries on watching TV, putting them out of her mind. When the messages become more threatening, she phone the police, who trace the messages and tell her that they are coming from within the house! Just a story, right? Well in 2014 one 16-year-old girl started receiving some pretty scary texts. But she thought it was all a joke. She went to bed and just before she fell asleep she received the text: "I'm in your house!" The man had broken in and was hiding underneath her bed. Thankfully though, the police caught him in time.

7. Sacamantecas (Spain)
In Spanish, Sacamantecas means 'fat extractor' and is a kind of disguised monster or drifter that steals the fat from children to feed on. The myth is thought to have begun with Spain's first recorded serial killer, Manuel Blanco Romasanta. In the late 19th Century, Romasanta was convicted of killing 13 people. He rendered their fat in order to make high quality soap, which he then sold - along with the victims'clothes. Romasanta was only one of several people caught for selling human fat in this era and so the myth of the Sacamantecas was born and used to frighten children into behaving.

8. The Black Volga (Poland)
The Black Volga was a classic Russian car and signified wealth and status in the Soviet States during the Cold War. If one was ever seen stalking the Warsaw cith streets, people would flee because it was said that the people inside kidnapped children. No one ever saw who was driving them. One story suggested that the Soviet leader Brezhnev was mortally ill and requested the blood of children to keep his hold on the empire. The Volgas, which were associated with Soviet officials, went out to abduct children and drain them of their young blood. Other versions of the story described the blood being sold to wealthy Arabs to cure leukemia or spoke of vicars, nuns, Satanists, and even the devil driving the car and making children disappear.

9. El Chupacabra (Puerto Rico)
The goat-sucking, spiny and reptile-like Chupacabra was first seen in 1995 in Puerto Rico. This modern legendary beast is thought to drain the blood, vampire-like, from the livestock of Central and South American farmers. The uproar around the first sighting, in which 150 animals were killed, led to a year of weekly chupacabra hunts around Puerto Rico. To unearth the origin of this monster, Benjamin Radford of the Skeptical Inquirer tracked down Madelyne Tolentino, the woman who first reported seeing the creature. He had a hunch: there was a sci-fi B-Movie called 'Species' that featured a creature in the final act that was remarkably similar to her description.nWhat's more, Species was set in Puerto Rico, it came out in the weeks before the first Chupacabra sighting, and Madelyne Tolentino had watched it.

10. Kuchisake Onna (Japan)
Japan never fails to disappoint with creepy myths and ghosts. Kuchisake-Onna is the malicious spirit of a woman who wears a surgical mask. She appears and asks you: "Am I Pretty?" If you say no. she kills you on the spot. If you say yes, she removes her surgical mask to reveal the her mouth has been slit at the corners like The Joker, and then asks:"How about now?" If you say no, she cuts you in half. But if you say yes, she slits your mouth to look like hers. This tale caused widespread panic the the late 1970s. Schools arranged for students to walk home in groups because of their fear of being attracked by the ghost. There is even a rumor that a coroner's report from 1979 showed a woman who'd been hit by a car - in pursuit of a child who had her cheeks slit.

10 New discover around the world
1. Speedy gene editing is being used in humans for the first time
CRISPR is a ground-breaking form of gene editing, and there are hopes that it could be used to help fight cancer. The procedure is being trialled in both China and the US, and aims to alter immune cells so that they are able to recognise cancer. A method is also being devised to shut off the CRISPR system once it’s done its job so it shouldn’t make any extra, unwanted genetic alterations.

2. The Earth’s core has its own jet stream
Satellites from the European Space Agency (ESA) have discovered a ‘jet stream’ deep inside the Earth. Lying 3,000 kilometres below the surface of Alaska and Siberia, the stream carries liquid metal half way around the planet at a speed of 40 kilometres a year. The 420-kilometre wide stream was found by three Swarm satellites during an ESA study on the Earth’s magnetic field.

3. Salamanders go the extra mile to find a mate
Small-mouthed salamanders travel almost nine kilometres on average in order to reproduce, risking death and dehydration. Scientists tested the amphibian’s endurance on small treadmills and found that smallmouthed salamanders were able to last four-times longer than those of a closely related group, which use cloning to reproduce. Some managed to walk on the tre=admill for two hours, an impressive show of stamina similar to a human jogging 120 kilometres.

4. Next-gen air-con could beam heat into space
Radioactive cooling is an extremely efficient version of air conditioning. By using a thermal emitter, physicists radiated heat out from Earth and into space. The emitter was placed in a vacuum chamber and directed at a clear sky. After 30 minutes, the emitter temperature fell by 40 degrees Celsius. This method could be used in the future to help chill medicines

5. Monkeys would be able to talk if their brain structure was different
Research has found that macaques have vocal tracts capable of speech. X-rays of a macaque eating and yawning showed they have the anatomy to make vowel sounds but lack the brainpower to do so.

6. Moon colonists could live in lava tubes
Below the Moon’s surface lie huge caverns formed by dried up molten rock from ancient volcanoes. Up to five kilometres in diameter, these subterranean cavities could be used to house future colonies. The tubes were spotted after small variations in the Moon’s gravitational pull were noticed, and if colonised, could protect potential settlers from radiation, harsh temperatures and meteor strikes.

7. The brain actively filters out background noise
Known as the ‘cocktail party effect’, the brain uses selective hearing to concentrate on one conversation.
Auditory tests using electrodes measured the difference in brain activity when exposed to incomprehensible speech followed by clear conversation.

8. Ants are intelligent enough to use tools
Hungarian scientists supplied ants with honey and water and a range of tools in which to carry them back to their nest. After experimenting with each tool, the ants learned to use sponges and paper to best soak up the liquid and transport it home.

9. Time spent outside is good for your eyes
Recent reports suggest rising rates of nearsightedness in children are down to too much time being spent indoors. By concentrating on brightly lit close-up objects like ebooks and smartphones, children’s eyes don’t have the opportunity to focus on distant objects, possibly making the onset of myopia more rapid. Experts believe this can be effectively combated by spending more time outdoors.

10. Killifish have adapted to survive toxic pollution levels
A species of fish has managed to withstand water contaminated with industrial waste. Atlantic killifish cells mutated until the correct genetic combination effectively protected cells from the toxins. The fish subsequently became up to 8,000 times more resistant to the harmful substances. The killifish’s ability to quickly change its genes was the key to so many being able to survive.
